Thoughts on Meditation from the Red Rocks in Sedona, AZ

The home of the Red Rocks is a powerful place. Many leaders, gurus, and sages have taken a home in Sedona for the powerful vibrations one can experience there. The book, “Fundamentals of Yoga: A Handbook of Theory, Practice and Application” by Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D., talks about environmental suggestions. Everything we know, have learned, or have experienced has come through suggestion, the underlying and fundamental cause of all mental phenomena, and is the powerful instrument of Samadhi (complete absorption).

I felt this concept a little bit more while meditating in Sedona.  The energy field of Mother Earth is much stronger when a person is surrounded by more of her than the concrete of the city. The suggestions one feels in nature are of wind, rocks, birds, sunrises, sunsets, and the never-ending sky, both during the days and the star filled nights.

However, while in the city, suggestions of a different nature are constantly picking at me. I have to walk through a mall to reach the PATH station and unconsciously have become obsessed with stuff. In 33 years of my life I have never owned a nice pair of sunglasses and after seeing a sign, “Prepare for the summer with these polarized sunglass,” with a picture of Cindy Crawford, I pulled out my credit card to get them. As I meditated and CLEANSED the vibrations or suggestions of the city, this observation came to me--they were suggestions from billboards, friends running on high RPMs (just like me), radio, and the cement vibrations.

These vibrations or suggestions we collect can be changed, from the teachings of many gurus and from personal observations. But we have to have the confidence that we CAN change them and move forward with faith--faith that our true Self is in us and is wanting to be heard, to shed our many masks to feel our true vibrations and understand our true inner suggestions from the Divine energy.

I want to maintain this connection with these inner suggestions and I am practicing a 40 day suggestion cleanse. I would really love for you all to join me. For the next 40 days chant OM 108 times, start with a thank you prayer to teachers or people in your life you are grateful for, acknowledging the ways they are assisting you on this journey.

Please share your experiences with me!

God Bless,
Suzanne
