Masala Bhangra what?

What the heck is Masala Bhangra?

So when you blend every Bollywood movie you ever saw with instructor Vivian, your guide through each dance step, you get the next great Grease knockoff!

Just kidding...

But you do have a really great time! Masala translates from the Hindi as "spicy" and Bhangra is a traditional folk dance from Northern India. So when you put them together you become the star of your own Bollywood musical segment. Vivian starts with the very basic steps and slowly builds the choreography into a full out rolling credits celebration filled with fun and fancy free.

The above video may not be of Vivian's class, but sometimes you have to see it to feel it!

Luckily there's no dance experience required. My only experience was watching the american Bollywood knockoff, "Marigold". Despite my inadequate dance background I still enjoyed skirting around the room waving my hands in the air and hopping from foot to foot. As a self-proclaimed Klutz to the 20th power this is quite a feat! But even though all the moves were completely new to me I didn't feel lost or out of control. Vivian explained everything easily and we would practice each step before adding it to the over all sequence.

So if you take anything away it should be this:

  • No it is not as hard as it might look!
  • Yes you be challenged, but in that good way that makes you giggle!
  • Yes you will feel like the leading role in your own kick-ass musical!

Masala means "spicy" in Hindi and Bhangra is a folk dance from the northern part of India.
This is an energetic cardio dance class that modernizes the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra by blending traditional Bhangra dance steps and the exhilaration of Bollywood (Hindi film) moves. This unique dance class mixes cardiovascular with fun, and is suitable for participants of all ages and fitness levels.
