Green Queens by replanting Trees!!

Last year we were all shocked by that strange storm that literally ripped trees from their roots and left Forest Hills looking like a post-tornado devastation zone.

This year the the Rego-Forest Preservation Council, the Queens Boulevard Restoration Group, and Jet Blue are helping to restore Forest Hills to it's original green beauty by planting trees in MacDonald Park and surroundings.

Please take volunteer your time to this amazing community event!

Milo's Words of Wisdom

Yoga is about staying cool and going with the flow.
Even when your are in the middle of practicing savasana and suddenly find yourself on top of a huge tower.

Just stay cool and go with the flow.

Even when a loud noisy sucking machine whirls around you and there is nowhere to run because you're still trying to figure out how you even got here on top of this tower. Maybe you're just that good at meditating, but then again, why couldn't you meditate yourself somewhere without towers and sucking monsters-like the bahamas.

Just stay cool and go with the flow.

Even when you realize the root of most of the difficulties in your life are caused by your own pet human who is strangely similar to Oddie even though she is not a dog.

Just stay cool and go with the flow.

At least your pet human usually has blueberry treats (yum!) and will eventually remember that you're here, hopefully saving you from having to jump.
It's cool...just flowing back to sleep...uh hem...I mean savasana.

Happy Bellies Make Me Happy

My father always asks me, "What is wrong with your generation and all these food allergies?!?!?!"

I don't know. A lot of us don't know. But our tummies are sad.
Sometimes it's not even about having allergies. We have just made decisions about how we want to eat and take care of ourselves. Even though the big city is a little bit more accommodating now then 10 years ago, it's still a little hard to find a gluten-free, nut-free vegan banana nut muffin in just any convenient store in Manhattan.

Luckily one of our wonderful students found a business that cares about food for the rest of us! The Happy Belly Bags are a fun way to provide a healthy gift to our food conscious friends. They provide different snacks, meals, and other goods in reusable pretty packaging. Take a look at their website for food ideas or just for curiosity.

Their Mission Statement Says it all:

Happy Belly Bags strives to provide healthy gifts to people suffering from food allergies, as well as those on restricted diets by choice or for health reasons. We also strive to do business in a manner that has the least amount of impact on the environment as possible, and to give back to charities that align with what we are about.

Yoga Flow Formless

This video of Dr Satkirin was recommended by one of our students and is pretty amazing to watch. Sometimes watching yoga is as soothing as doing yoga.

Yoga for the less than serious...

I'm listening to the kids yoga class practice their breathing- there is laughing involved. There are horse sounds, bubbling sounds, lion sounds, and snorting sounds- more laughing.

As I write this they are making fun of the sanskrit words.
Pranayama has become panayami and everyone is okay with it. Still laughing.

Then they feel each others tummy for Belly Breath- giggles.

Maybe this is how yoga should be all the time. Always room for silliness. Room to make fun of the words, the poses, and, more importantly, ourselves. Not to say that we can't have a serious practice- just being mindful that we aren't taking our practice so seriously that we forget the important things.

Kids don't care about perfection- only about enjoying the moment. Next time I'm in class I'll try not to be worried about where my gaze is, wondering my shoulder will feel like doing forearm stand, or if the person next to me has a better forearm stand.

I'll just laugh at myself for thinking Pincha Mayurasana is "Pinch you in your arsana"!

Prenatal Yoga at Bamboomoves

There is this beautiful, comforting energy that enters the studio every time there is a prenatal yoga class. All the women have this amazing presence that seems to bring peace to everyone around them.

They don't notice it.

Even Milo, our little furry mascot, would stay close to the prenatal students and on more than one occasion had to be carried out of the classroom after not wanting to give up his spot at their feet.

They don't notice the effects they have on others.

They come in and join each other in the room ready to share their experiences, grow in their practice, and find some rest. It's like a community in a community. They are supportive of each other and find comfort in eachothers support.

They come from all different walks of life. Some of our prenatal students have an established Yoga practice, but attend this gentle version just to experience the commonality with other women. Some have never been to a yoga class in their life, but found their way to our little studio. They uphold a unique bond.

Even after they give birth, they still ask about each other and remain friends. Sometimes I miss the ones that have moved on to motherhood, but I am grateful that we were able to share an important transition in their lives.

Maybe it was just a few classes or the whole pregnancy. It still is a special moment-every time.
