Everybody has a Yoga Story!

We all have a story. We all have a really interesting story about how yoga got us to where we are now. I remember my first class at bamboomoves- Andrew picked me up in Dhanurasana (bow pose) and swung me like a handbag. It helped me realize that I could do more with my body then I ever thought possible due to all the injuries I've had in my life. Stories were meant to be shared. Whether we share then with friends, family, or strangers our stories can inspire others to do more then they imagined. So let's tell them!

Maybe you can share your experiences at the Oct. 3rd Street Fair!!! Of course we will have our booth and we always need volunteers! All that's required is to tell others about yoga. People are curious, but don't know where to start. You can help guide!

Then again maybe your more of a one-on-on one person. Become part of our Yoga Mentor Program! Maybe your experienced and maybe your not, that's okay. It's just an opportunity to connect with someone else in the yoga community so you can grow together, share together, and who knows where that will go!

Whatever works best for you- just open up to people! Who knows how many people you can connect with in a lifetime! Tell a story~

Why is Yoga so Awesome for Kids?!?

Besides being super fun yoga brings so many benefits to a child's universe. Physically yoga increases strength, flexibility, and creates body awareness. Then there are the other benefits like building self esteem, focus, and confidence in a non-competitive environment. Yoga helps kids to learn teamwork and working with their friends toward accomplishing a goal. Even for children yoga enhances the mind, body, and spirit!

Nicaragua- We're Coming With Our Best Intentions!!!

What a busy Saturday!

I know that I don't need to speak Spanish or have experience in construction, but Kaity is going to fill in all the other blanks about our trip to Nicaragua. Please bring all your questions, thoughts, and comments so we'll all be prepared for this exciting excursion. Even if you're not sure if you're going yet, come anyway so we can help you make up your mind. Hey Kaity- how do you say "Can't wait!" in Spanish?

Also we have our Foundations Level 1 later in the afternoon @ 3:30. Nick and Annie will be exploring poses, yoga philosophy, and breathing techniques! It's the perfect time to ask questions and try new things. So Nick and Annie, what the heck is samavritti other than being a really fun word to say, and what's the deal with warrior 2 and knees, oh yeah, and how come....okay I guess I should go too....

Last, but not least KIDS CLASSES!! They already started, but there is nothing wrong with making an entrance. "When the big wind blows" it blows all our amazing Yoga Kids into more fun, games, and awesomeness!
Mondays and Fridays at 4:50pm

We're running out of excuses- Thank Goodness!!

A lot of times we have these beliefs of why we can't do yoga- it's for chicks, can't touch toes, not skinny, not vegan, and way too old. Most of us have fallen into one or all of these categories at some point in our lives. Luckily yoga is about letting go of these old, out-dated, and usually untrue beliefs about what yoga is and about who we should be. I'm happy to note that I have seen a pleasant shift in the average beginners yoga class- more men and a lot more seniors! People seem to be accepting that the benefits of yoga far out weigh the stereotypes.

An article by Holly St.Lyfer sums it up like this: Real Men do Yoga

Real people are doing yoga. No more half naked swami's floating above the ground in lotus pose glowing in enlightened yogic bliss. Now it's just the rest of us- chubby, stiff, older, wiser- making our own way to peace.

What a storm!

We still had classes as planned yesterday, although Forest Hills was hit hard by the rushing winds. Fortunately, things are settling down a bit and we'll have classes as usual today, including our first kids class of the semester for ages 7-12, and our regular evening schedule.

And we are super excited for tomorrow's Salsa workshop with Hossy - we are ready to twist, turn, and shake la cadera with Hossy and her partner Levi. If you don't know already, it's open to all and it's by donation, and proceeds are going towards our Nicaragua trip in 2011.

In a nutshell: Salsa Workshop is Saturday, Sept. 18 from 3:30-5:30pm. Suggested donation: $20 and the more the merrier!

¡Hasta pronto!

Au revoir my lovelies!

As many of you know, today is my last day at Bamboomoves... And with all your love, well wishes, and positive energy, it has been a very good one. I am overwhelmed by the support I have received today (and everyday for that matter) and it feels good to know I will be missed.

I have very much enjoyed practicing and learning with you... talking with you... helping you... blogging and writing for you... teaching you (for those of you who took my African Dance class) laughing with you... You have all touched my life in often deliriously awesome ways... I am so fortunate to have you in my life.

So... thank you. Much love and positive energy.

Love,
Kristen
