“Startling... impeccable... a storm of approval for The Animals Film.” —The Guardian

"The most impressive film maudit, possibly too hot to handle, is The Animals Film, a polemical onslaught, stuffed with footage never before shown, and a wealth of newly-shot material often taken undercover, which documents...mankind's degradation, exploitation, and often pointless torture, of the creatures who share our planet... Proves, beyond contradiction, that this behaviour is not just random or personal but part of our organised society, with drug companies, government departments, scientists, military authorities, factory farmers, university research laboratories, for their own selfish ends, for profit in money or prestige. I do not know when I have come out of a screening so moved by the power of the cinema as a medium to transform the entire sensibility of an audience." —Sunday Times (UK)

Suzanne in Egypt!

Last month Suzanne took a trip to Egypt... a lot of you have asked to hear more about her travels... so... here you go!

Okay everyone, I’ve been back for one month and people are still requesting pictures and stories so in brief, below I have shared with you some of the highlights of the trip to Cairo, Egypt.

I visited a long time friend there, someone who I have traveled with, in the United States, Canada, and Morocco. Needless to say, we know each other well and love exploring. I arrived at 5 pm, after a 12 hour flight from JFK; right away as we drove away from the airport into downtown Cairo I realized that I was no longer in NYC. With the amazing communication from driver to driver through horns, no yellow lines to guide traffic, and drivers that had no fears as they zoomed in and out in packed rush hour streets.

Once home, cleaned up and some stories shared, we were out on the town. We prowled the back streets to see areas, cafés and churches still open, typically only known to local Egyptian people. It was nice staying with someone who deemed themselves as local, so we could explore these back alley ways and hang out with local Egyptians, who were born and raised in Cairo. We ordered tasty homemade hummus, spicy eggplant dishes, Egyptian Pizza from a stone oven, semi-sweet Egyptian Coffee, and tea throughout the night. When the sun started to rise at 6 am, we finally found our way home.

The energy of the Pyramids is one reason why I was attracted to Cairo. I spent one day there, meditating, lying in the hot, sandy sun, and reading the hieroglyphics on the pyramids and surrounding architecture. In the Great Pyramid, I could smell the sweat of the people who built these great structures and could feel the determination they had of trying to finish such a task. Feeling the energy from such an ancient time felt to me as a rebirth of my old self into my new self. As I have been back I feel that I am operating on a different energy plane, but it is still difficult to understand this transformation.

In a short week, I felt that I was able to see Cairo, I spent many hours with people who lived, worked, and who were born in Cairo. My final examples: A wonderful Sudanese Coffee woman, who made our coffee with such love and heart that the flavor can never be duplicated. A woman I met on the subway who hugged me with her eyes and welcomed me to Egypt, saying “Cairo is a better place today because of you,” a school girl who by her wanting to speak English and me trying to practice Arabic, became friend during an hour walk and found the bus back downtown to Cairo.

To me this is why I travel. It is a breath of fresh air to see people in their own environments, to be the minority, to try and communicate in another language, body language, or learning another mode of communication to be lost for several hours but to enjoy the process. It is a blessing to find the similarities between ones self and another person from half way around the world and share in love and smiles. Thank you to my wonderful guides and the Egyptian people for a wonderful vacation Bamboomovers, I missed you all!!!

Good Morning Bamboomovers,

I hope you all enjoyed the impromptu Odwalla Day at the studio last week… I wanted to share the photos of your gorgeous faces and yoga poses with your Odwalla goodies. Thank you so much for all of your support and well wishes… the 10k this weekend was fantastic.

During my race this weekend, I was particularly grateful for my yoga practice. Last week, in place of my usual weight workouts after my runs, I took yoga class. I do select asanas on a daily basis, but I usually only fit in two full classes a week. The difference in my running after a week of just running + yoga was amazing… my hips were open… my shoulders were open and relaxed, thus my stride came more easily, as did my breath. My mind was quiet, peaceful, and confident, even in the face of tough hills. I realised how important my yoga practice is to my running and how thankful I am to have that to draw on in competition.

I am also lucky to be sponsored by Odwalla, a company that shares many of the earth/body/community conscious values of Bamboomoves. They pride themselves on respecting their customers, respecting the earth, and giving back to the community. Most recently, Odwalla launched its third annual Plant a Tree program, partnering with America’s State Parks to support the environment and help with reforestation and planting initiatives. For more information about the program (and Odwalla), visit their website, www.odwalla.com.

In the meantime, thank you again, enjoy the photos, and I will see you all soon!

Namaste,

Kristen

"I learned that in your body you have so much space and you can actually move inside that. There is space between organs, there is space between bones, there is space between atom and cell, so you can actually start training yourself to breathe a kind of air into that space. And then I understood that the pain is actually not having space, it's when organs and everything press inside, so by breathing air you can make the pain just disappear." -Marina Abramović
