African Dance Workshop: Saturday, April 10 - 3:30-5pm. ($35)

Hello my lovely Bamboomovers,

I will be teaching an African Dance workshop on Saturday, April 10th, from 3:30 - 5pm. There will be live drumming and it will be ridiculously awesome. A lot of you have come to me saying things like, "I really want to come, but I am not a good dancer," or, "I really want to come, but I am too self conscious." Well, it doesn't matter if you don't know how to dance... you know how to move, don't you? If you don't catch some of the moves, you can do your own thing. And don't be shy... you are all gorgeous and the music and the movements will make you feel even more so... This workshop is just going to be about having fun, moving your body and enjoying the music. I promise you will feel amazing when we are done. And a lot of you have only seen my graphic design skills, or my taking-care-of-you-from behind-the-desk-skills... don't you want to see my mad dance skills? I thought so. I will see you there.

xoxo,
Kristen

Bamboomoves: Classes in the Community!

As some of you know, we are becoming more active in bringing yoga to the community. We have been lucky to have the opportunity to join forces with three places that, like us, emphasize healthy living...

Victoria Ohana, who is currently enrolled in our Bamboo Warrior Teacher's Training, is teaching once a week at Queens Mixed Martial Arts. Queens MMA has classes in BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Striking and MMA.

Our very own Laura Morales is teaching young women in an after school yoga program at Bnos Malka Academy, a secondary school in Forest Hills. The Academy is located at 71-02 113th st, at 71st Ave.

Humane alert: protect the seals.

Each year, mother harp seals travel for thousands of kilometers from Greenland to Canada in an arduous annual migration. Their destination is the sea ice that forms off Canada’s east coast—ice floes upon which they give birth to their pups in the spring, creating the spectacular harp seal nursery.

But tragically, the seals are facing a natural disaster. Over the past thirty years, we have witnessed a steady decline in sea ice cover in the northwest Atlantic. This year, Environment Canada says we are witnessing the worst ice in history off Canada’s east coast. For the first year on record, virtually no sea ice has formed in key seal birthing areas. The impact on seals will be devastating. Many mother seals are likely to abort in the water, and unprecedented numbers of pups will die.

Still, the Canadian government has refused to cancel the 2010 commercial seal hunt. If the hunt goes on, the few pups who live through this disaster will be subjected to the largest slaughter of marine mammals on earth. Sealers will club and shoot to death the pups clinging to tiny pans of ice in the ocean. It will be a slaughter of the survivors.

Please contact Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and demand that the 2010 commercial seal hunt be cancelled.

Sunchips® in compostable bags

photo via the green debate team

Last night I was watching TV and a commercial came on for Sunchips® in their new, completely compostable bags. I haven't eaten Sunchips for years, but I thought it was fantastic to see a major corporation taking such a strong, eco-friendly stance.

I think I am a little late on this news and I don't know many details, but you can check out their site for more information.

Bamboomoves Community Cookbook: Call for Entries!

As you might know, all of us here love to cook. We come from different nutritional backgrounds, but we are all healthy (for the most part. ha). Lately there has been a lot of recipe sharing going on at the studio, and we thought it would be a great idea to compile the favourites into a Bamboomoves Community Cookbook. So we are calling all Bamboomovers, vegan, veg and otherwise, for entries... send your favourite recipes to bamboomovesnyc@gmail.com or submit them directly to the front desk. Please include your name and a little bit about the recipe (why it is your favourite, where it came from...) and hopefully we will end up with a yummy selection we can share with all.
