Introducing the Bamboomoves Yogi Mentor Program:

As we all know, being a yogi or yogini is not an easy lifestyle or transition. Some days one finds oneself still taking things personally, letting emotions rule, or craving non-yogic foods. Some days asana practice feels difficult and certain poses uncomfortable. On these days, it helps to have someone (experienced) to talk with about frustrations and weaknesses, or to gain clarity on what being a true yogi really means.

The Bamboomoves managing staff realized that as students of the Bamboomoves family, you may want these types of opportunities... thus, our new program: the Bamboomoves Yogi Mentor Program.

If you are more advanced or have been a family member here at since we started, you could sign up to be a mentor and guide the newer students on their path to being a yogi/yogini. If you are new member and would like guidance when you are feeling down, weak, or need questions answered, you could sign-up as a mentoree. Once a list is started, we will begin matching members.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the managing staff or the evening desk staff. We are here to help!!!

Reviewed by Time Out New York.

So, we were reviewed by Anna Brand from Time Out New York... apparently she had a bit of a tough time in class, but we are still excited to see our studio on TONY. Review is as follows...

Bamboomoves
(107-40 Queens Blvd between 70th Rd and 71st Ave, second floor, Forest Hills, Queens; 718-263-0788,bamboomobesyoga.com) • (3045 Buhre Ave at Westchester Ave, Bronx; 347-281-9700,bamboomovesyoga.com) Single class $20, packages available.
Types of yoga offered: Hatha and vinyasa
Name of class: Level I Yoga
Length: 75 minutes
What to expect: A so-called beginners’ class that’s really designed for people who know what they’re doing; you move through the postures rapidly.
Level: Some experience helpss welcome.
The verdict: Following a collective om, the class of roughly 20 people moved from pose to pose with ease. Instructions were delivered quickly, leaving less experienced students flailing behind the rows of elastic-bodied experts. After each movement, the instructor pranced around, adjusting hips, shoulders and toes to assure that each person was aligned correctly. I felt like an outsider breaking into a forbidden cult: What started with simple middle-school-gym-class stretching session soon turned into a barrage of foreign commands that meant nothing to me. Ultimately, I was able to cobble together some poses based on what others around me were doing. And though it was shameful standing near a 50-year-old man with better flexibility and stamina than I have, I did enjoy breaking free of my rounded shoulders and stiff neck, for a few fleeting moments.—Anna Brand

...

Our new green wall (thank you Rego Park Green Alliance)! The plants were grown/hosted by P.S. 139, P.S. 174, the Rego Park Community, and Yale University (thank you!)... the wood was illustrated by a local artist, Suzuyo (thank you!)... the herbs are yours to take. Being green and building community!

Let it snow...

The weather outside was frightful but the company of the Bamboomoves staff was so delightful... ok, sorry, I couldn't resist... Saturday night we had our Bamboomoves staff holiday party; most everyone came and we had lots of delicious food (vegan potluck... please note, Sherry, our Tai-Chi instructor, makes the best vegan dumplings of all time).

We also had our new green wall delivered this weekend. Stay tuned for photos... and please stop by to check it out and clip  your own mint, chives, and oregano to take home.

Kin Killerie Designs.

Here on the holiday gift tip again... my good friend and old roommate started a jewelry company, Kin Killerie, earlier this year. From their Etsy mission statement:

"Kin Killerie is a sister duo whose philosophy is to create handmade, unique products mined from the abundance of inspiration in a hardware store! Beautiful shapes, vibrant colors and skillful patterns combine to make our “hardware unhinged” collection a strong statement in beauty and form.

The pieces in our jewelry collection are made using materials found at the hardware store - cogs, valves, pipes and more all become beautiful objects that are strong in both design and function.

Kin Killerie - not your Momma's toolbox!"

Check out their Etsy store here.
