November calendar...

Check out what we have going on in November (is it really that close to the end of the year already??!)

Inversion Poses Workshop with Yoshio
Saturday, November 7th: 3:30 - 6:30pm
$35 pre-registration, $45 day of

We are very excited to be hosting Yoshio and Mariangel in this All Levels Inversion Workshop in November.

This workshop will focus on Sirshasana (head stand) and PinchaMayurasana (forearm balance). Headstand calms the mind, strengthens the arms, legs and spine and improves balance. Regular headstand practice rejuvenates brain cells and stimulates the nervous system. Forearm balance is a stress-relieving pose that also strengthens and stretches the shoulders, arms, and back.

This workshop is intended to teach the spiritual intention of these poses and give students time to slowly work on them, making rapid progress in a short time.

Level I Foundations Workshop
Saturday, November 21: 3:30 - 6:30pm
$45 pre-registration, $55 day of

If you are new or returning to Yoga... or just want a refresher course, this workshop is a great place to start. Taught by the Bamboomoves staff, this three hour workshop (3:30-6:30pm) provides guidance through beginning sequences (including Surya Namaskara), Samavritti & Ujjayi breathing, finishing poses and Yama & Niyama and the 8 Limbs of Astanga Yoga.

Enlighten up!

I know I am a little late to the table of this... Enlighten up! premiered earlier this year and I am just now getting around to watching the trailer. Better late than never right? It looks wonderful, sweet and hopeful. Username Rapug put it best in the youtube comments:

'I saw this movie pre-release. All I can say is: see it, see it, see it! It was fascinating, funny, uplifting and real. Not just for followers of yoga, but for anyone who has pursued a winding spiritual, intellectual or personal journey. And it doesn't hurt that Nick is super cute.'

Check it out:

Enlighten up is also available for pre-order. (Holiday gift idea?!)

This one is for the yoginistas.

Good news... Shabby Apple came out with a new fitness line at the beginning of this month. All the gear is named after yoga poses... and (here is the best part)... it is cute and cheaper than Lululemon. (sorry, Lu, but you know we still love you.)

Also a plus, Shabby Apple is a socially responsible company.

(Note, they also have some cute maternity wear...)

We have worms!

ok, not those kind of worms... composting worms!

After our composting workshop we were all very inspired to give it a go... Yesterday Kaity went to pick up our new little petlets at the Union Square Green Market...
We shredded up some news paper, wet it down with water, dumped the worms and soil on top and waited for them to burrow their way to the bottom.

And now we have our very own composting bin right here in the studio!

If you are interested in starting your own composting bin, check out the New York City Composting Project.

Bamboomoves gets a green wall... well, almost.

Last week Yvonne and Page from the Rego Park Green Alliance stopped in to talk to us about setting up a green wall for our studio.

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, a green wall is a (wall), freestanding or part of a building, that is partially or completely covered with vegetation. Green walls are often found in urban environments where green space is limited; they are more popular internationally but are gaining ground in the United States.

The Rego Park Alliance has posted a great entry on their blog, explaining all aspects of their green wall project, so rather than recreate it, I invite you to check out their post…

From their blog: “The Rego Park Green Alliance will be hosting four green walls in various commercial/school locations over the next couple of months. The walls are 2’ X 4’ and will contain mints, basil, choi, oregano, lettuce, and several other herbs and vegetables. We will also be hosting a residential wall for homes.

Our first wall will be hosted by BambooMoves… a fabulous yoga studio with great people and a lovely ambiance. They serve Rego Park, Kew Gardens, and Forest Hills…”

Please click here for the full entry… and if you are interested in hosting your own green wall please contact Yvonne at 917 597 3089.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at our street fair booths this weekend, making it a smooth success. x

Yoga mat bags at Pomme Designs

One of my favourite things about yoga is being able to share it with those close to me. My friend Sara and I started taking yoga a couple of years ago at Yoga to the People... we have since found new places to practice... she tends to stay closer to her home in Park Slope and I do most of my yoga here at Bamboomoves... but doing yoga together brought us closer...

Anyway, as well as being a beautiful little yogini, Sara is one of the most talented, creative people I know. We originally met through work... she was my art director at my very first design job in NYC... she now works as the designer for Fishs Eddy. I am sure you are thinking, 'this is all well and good, but why is she writing this on the Bamboo Blog?' Well Sara just opened up her Etsy Store, Pomme Designs, which is filled with her brilliant, hand-made creations, including really, really cute yoga mat bags. Everything on her site is locally/hand made, reasonably priced and would make a great holiday/birthday/any day gift.
