TIME: The Real Cost of Cheap Food

"He's raised on grass and hay and lives happily on a pasture by the ocean. His meat is free of antibiotics, but can we afford to eat it? We can't afford not to." Read the TIME Magazine cover story here.

Yoginistas!

Nicholas (our totally great instructor) recently turned me on to Hard Tail, a company that makes, among other things, really awesome yoga clothes. And what is even more awesome, their new line, Hard Tail Green Label, is well... green! Everything in the line is made with organic cottons and sustainable fabrics (bamboo!!) and dyed naturally with earth-friendly dyes.

Hard Tail can be found at Bloomingdale's and Atruim; for a full list of stores check out their site.

Guys, Hard Tail doesn't have a men's line, but check out these simple 3/4 length yoga pants from Bamboo Clothing (UK)... very Rafa Nadal. Also check out Lululemon's mens line... it has more of a men's selection than most places I have seen.

Enjoy!

What’s good for mom is good for baby!

Lately we have had a lot of radiant, expecting mammas-to-be in Bamboomoves class… so we thought we would dedicate a little bit of space on the blog to talk about the benefits of prenatal yoga.

Of course, not everyone is comfortable doing yoga during their pregnancy and as with any other exercise routine, one should consult their physician first (and wait for the morning sickness to pass!) before continuing/beginning class. (Also, one should be sure to ease into their practice and listen to body queues). But for those who are able, yoga can be a great, low impact form of exercise during pregnancy, providing time to deeply connect/reconnect with oneself and with the little being growing inside.

Prenatal yoga allows women to explore their changing body gently and without judgment. It can help relieve pain associated with the physical changes that come with pregnancy. As pregnancy progresses, the growth of the belly and breasts may contribute to back pain; yoga strengthens and straightens the spine, alleviating pain, regulating posture, and preparing a woman for the physically demanding job of carrying the baby, both before and after the birth.

The meditative nature of yoga quiets the mind, decreasing anxiety, stress and fatigue, developing a peaceful state of mind for mom and a healthier internal environment for the baby.

A regular yoga practice can be beneficial during labour; hip flexibility can help push the baby through the canal during birth and strong breathing techniques can aid during the difficulty of labour and delivery.

As we said, we have a lot of moms-to-be at Bamboomoves, but there is always room for more. We currently offer private prenatal sessions and have prenatal yoga on Fridays at 6:30pm; starting Monday, September 14th, we will also have a 1:30 – 2:30pm prenatal class… So if you are expecting, please come join us and reap the benefits that will last long after delivery.

What's on for fall...

We are definitely looking forward to fall here at Bamboomoves... We are excited for our second birthday (yay!), our new parent/child classes, our fall open house and street fair and several great workshops.

Check out our September and October calenders above (click to enlarge) and start planning your fall with us.

We are especially excited for the AcroYoga Workshop with Chris Loebsack on October 10th... registration is already open and it is guaranteed to fill up quick, so sign up!

And speaking of workshops, there is still room in the Level I Foundations Workshop this Saturday from 3:30-6:30pm. Registration for that, and for One Thousand Bows for Peace (August 22) can still be done online... or in person.

Finally! More kids yoga classes! (REVISED!)

Lately a lot of people have come in asking about kids yoga classes, and while we have kid's and prenatal classes on Fridays we don't have extensive options... But come September we will!

Starting Monday, September 14th, we will have a whole afternoon of children oriented classes to choose from!

They are as follows...

Parent & Child Yoga, walkers to 3 years old: 11:30 - 12:15
Through the use of songs, routines and partner poses, this class is fun for everyone! There is nothing more precious than spending one on one time with your child. In this class parents and children will practice yoga poses together through games, stories and imaginary adventures. This class will strengthen developing muscles and help build coordination. Simple breathing activities will help children become more focused and aware of their surroundings both on and off the mat.

Mom/Dad & Baby Yoga, 2 months-new walkers: 12:30 - 1:15
This class is a great way for moms to spend time bonding with their babies. Infants are natural yogis and yoginis. Just watch a baby try to push up off the floor - it’s a cobra pose! In Mom and Baby yoga, moms will practice asanas that help strengthen and tone the body after labour and delivery. Baby Yoga exercises will help muscular development, aid in digestion and help with circulation. This class is appropriate for all levels. Dads are welcome too!

Prenatal Yoga: 1:30 - 2:30
Prenatal Yoga is appropriate for moms-to-be at any stage during pregnancy. Whether you have an established yoga practice or you have never taken a class in you life, Prenatal Yoga can benefit all expectant mothers. This class will focus on asanas that address the most common conditions of pregnancy as well as breathing and relaxation techniques to help with labor and delivery.

Kids Yoga, 3-6 years old: 4:00 - 4:45
Nothing is more powerful than a child's imagination. This class helps children build strength, flexibility and coordination. As they learn new poses, children increase body consciousness and find new ways to express thoughts and emotions. At this age we also begin to explore how the breath moves through the body through interactive games, songs and visualizations.

Kids Capoeira, 3-6 years old: 4:50 - 5:35
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, games, music and dance.

We will also have Kids Capoeira from 4:00-4:45 and Kids Yoga from 4:50-5:35, both classes for ages 7-12, on Fridays, starting September 18th. We will also continue to offer our Friday, 6:30pm Prenatal class.

Prices for the kids classes are as follows:

Parent and Child Yoga: $25
