Barbara, this one is for you!

Barbara called today asking if I would post something easier to copy/paste with the information for the 16 Ways Workshop on Saturday... here it is!

16 Ways: The Power of Polarity (w/ Dylan Newcomb):

Master these polarities in your life:

Be Strong and assertive while also being receptive and sensitive. Feel connected and involved while remaining non-attached and objective. Be free and adventurous while staying grounded and secure. Interact dynamically with the world using both your logic and your intuition.

Explore the eight core polarities we deal with on a daily basis through simple movements, vowel sounds and playful social interactions. Gain insight into your own personality and energy patterns. Experience the 16 Ways Horizontal Form; a series of sixteen movements which quickly and dramatically enhance your ability to think, feel and act in new and more dynamically balanced ways.

The Little Book of Hindu Deities

Remember learning about Greek and Roman Gods in elementary school? In 6th grade we had a separate textbook dedicated to the subject... Imagine if they had taught Hindu Gods... We could have used The Little Book of Hindu Deities, by Sanjay Patel.

Andrew brought in a copy of this little gem yesterday... the illustrations are beautifully awesome... (Patel is an illustrator at Pixar, so I guess the illustrations have to be good...) and the descriptions are playful and accessible...

Emily the Nomad.

A friend of mine from high school is currently in India for a very extended visit and is keeping a blog. She is, among other things, practicing yoga and meditation and i love, love, love her blog. Check it out!

Yoga, not yogurt.

This weekend, Lee Bines, host of Issues Under Fire, interviewed Bamboomoves Bronx owner Michael Baez.

Among many things, Michael talked about Bamboomoves' unique role in the Bronx, the importance of being present, keeping hydrated and his history in martial arts and how it drove him to become a vegetarian. (Which in turn healed his allergies and asthma...)

He also introduced the 21 Days to Wellness program at the Bronx location, in which interested students commit to class for 21 days, while detoxing, cleansing and eating healthy. (Call Bamboomoves Bronx for more information: 347-281-9700.)

Thank you Michael, for making us Bamboomovers look gooood!

(Michael's segment starts around the 16:00 mark.)

Tell us your opinion: who should regulate yoga?

With our Bamboo Warrior Training coming up in August, I have been thinking about a story the New York Times reported a couple of weeks ago discussing a recent trend of state governments attempting to regulate yoga teacher training programs. The regulations would require a pricey certification/fee process and would be conducted independent of Yoga Alliance.

Read the article here... and let us know what you think in the comment section.

Yoga for Your Cycle.

Sorry guys, this one is for the ladies...

Last week a woman came in and, among other things, asked if it was ok to do yoga during her period. I think I frightened her with my emphatic enthusiasm... but for me, yoga has done wonders for my physical and mental well being during menstruation... and I am a strong advocate for exercise in general during that time of the month.

And although Andrew cautioned her against holding inversions for too long (there are a range of opinions on whether one should practice inverted poses such as shoulder and headstands while menstruating), he was also encouraging of practicing during menstruation.

So anyway, I came across a video called "Yoga for Your Cycle," on yogatoday.com. It's a short practice, designed to assist the downward flow of prana and provide menstrual relief.

So ladies, click away!

**For those of you who have never checked it out, Yogatoday offers one free yoga class a week online for the times you can't make it to the studio. They also offer the option to download classes at $3.99 each, or buy a $9.99 per month membership, which allows you access to all classes, as well as $2.99 downloads. They are three instructors and they do classes for all levels in several yoga styles.

Kaity does Nicaragua.

Our lovely Kaity just returned from an eight day trip to Nicaragua where she, among other things, built a house.

Working with the organization Bridges to Community, a group Kaity was introduced to in high school through her church, she, a group of girls from Camp Waukeela (NH), and about eight Spanish workers, spent three and a half days building a new house for a Nicaraguan family.

The group also practiced daily, studied the yoga sutras, went to the beach (one of the Spanish workers accompanying them saw the ocean for the first time), took in some local comedy and mime performances, and even took a salsa class, taught by another Bamboomover along on the trip, Hossy.

Check out Kaity's full photo set in the webshots album.
